The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government to respond to a petition demanding a CBI or SIT probe into the killing of the 20-year-old Dalit woman and two of her family members.

While hearing the matter on Wednesday, a bench of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Aravind Kumar sought the State government's demands to move the case out of Madhya Pradesh.

As per Live Law, it is alleged that the state police investigation has been "derailed" due to the influence of former state Home Minister Bhupendra Singh.

Based on this, the petitioner has sought a transfer of the trial outside Madhya Pradesh for an unbiased investigation.

In the petition before the top court, Anjana's mother has alleged that the BJP leader is "influencing and threatening the witnesses” and prosecution will not be possible in Madhya Pradesh.

“The sabotage of the investigation and the killing of eyewitnesses were the result of a criminal conspiracy, which involved members of the village’s dominant community headed by the former Home Minister of the State of M.P," the petition added, prompting the court to demand a response by the third week of March.

About The Case

In May 2024, 20-year-old Dalit woman Anjana died after she allegedly fell from an ambulance which was carrying the body of her uncle,fhm63 who had been beaten a few days ago. Before this, her brother had been murdered by a group of men after he "refused to settle" a molestation case against them filed by Anjana. Furthermore, their mother was also allegedly stripped and beaten in August 2023.

Anjana's death sparked a massive uproar with Congress and other opposition parties targeting the ruling BJP government in the state. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who assumed office in November 2023, visited the family and assured justice.

The family has alleged foul play in the deaths of Anjana and her family members, which has been ruled out by Sagar Police. However, the family continues to state that police and authorities are "shielding the accused" due to their links with BJP MLA and former state Home Minister Bhupendra Singh.
